tidy line-up including randomer, gilbr, voiski and tolouse low trax. tip! in terms of experimental, techno, very few come close to the impact that this uk producer has had on the scene. with a sound that is rarely classifiable, randomer’s dekmantel contribution is a staggered, minimally-twisted, dark, kind-of-two step, awesome thing. versatile records’ gilb’r has found himself an integral part of the dutch scene since moving to amsterdam, and brings forth his organic, percussive grooves that have helped define his music, and label to date. salon des amateurs’ tolouse low trax provides a seasoned session of amniotic, grizzled, hypnotic post-everything music, that is eerily discomforting and wonderfully pleasurable at the same time. and on the ep’s fourth track, parisian techno wizard, voiski adds layered organic, futuristic loops that work to stale the progress of time, and space.

xixa balance ep (apa002) abstract places audio elusive producer xixa delivers the second abstract places audio release. balance is a three-track ep where the co-founder of the label packs a solid techno sound drowned in complex and evolving atmospheres. as first label’s release (clip - gebre, 2016), this is not a 100% club record, we can hear ambient and idm influences, but a1 and b1 are perfect tracks to keep a techno set full of rhythm and tension, and will get its place on any dj record bag. a1 balance is built around a distorted but controlled techno beat. patiently, a wide palette of drones and other-worldly artefacts are growing next to carefully crafted percussive sounds. 1984 opens the b side of the 12”, with a 4 to the floor overdriven bass drum and a reverse reverb announcing its main synth sequence, accompanied by organic hi-hats and clap sounds. a collection of ethereal drones and noises is also used, giving the track a sense of cohesion and gluing its different parts. life inside a snow ball is xixa s personal take on ambient. some of the drones and artefacts from a1 are now mixed with new quasi- harmonic emotional textures and subtle noises emerging from a deep unknown space and forming a complete new sonic experience. balance ep is a very solid second release by abstract places audio that confirms the label sound and philosophy.

next up on bucharest’s raw tools label is börft co-founder, johan sturesson, also known to be part of the swedish electronic trio, frak. the four-track ep consists in music from the private vaults of the producer, that has been kept secret for almost 20 years. rough and gritty, his analogue approach and stripped down sound define the record. starting with the rave sounding “uncle owl” and then moving to a more darkly atmospheric title track, kord shows his muscles on the flipside with some more techno infused and bass driven dancefloor cuts.

this 4-track ep combines ambient and techno elements to create immersive landscapes, which later on transform into the techno grooves. the concept of this release, “unknown frequency”, defines the limited nature of human perception, which is unable to experience the full universe of the sound.
on the a-side lies the main concept track as well as its landscape/ambient version. both works express the positive tension and harmonious excitement of the discoveries to come. on the b-side, first track - “traces” continues the search of the unknown. this time, darker regions of mind are explored by the sinister grooves and minimalistic atmospheres. final track “looking for the exit” is supposed to give an answer and release the tension of the ep, but after experiencing the unknown, nothing is the same anymore.

somne debuts on just this. the italian producer, whose real name is federico maccherone, presents his first release of 2017 – a solo ep marrying the same ethereal, wide-angle synthesis and intricate drum programming that appears on standout work for boddika’s nonplus imprint and the afterlife label. more than ever, maccherone shows his range – rolling, meditative recordings sit comfortably alongside some more overtly dance floor material, with both approaches bound by the same high-end production values listeners and dj’s alike have come to expect from the somne project. in various ways, the ep offers a certain degree of insight into maccherone’s dual identity as a producer of both clinical, dance-floor fare as well as a cerebral, leftfield work – and in turn, how the artist draws together these two strands of creative endeavour to craft unique and profoundly emotive electronic music. nods to classic idm and ambient sit at the periphery of the recordings, although the main focus is on the propulsive, contemporary techno derivatives – from warping, half-time opener divided love, with its crisp, white noise washes and clinical use of distortion – through to endgame’s exacting, peak-time drive. and whilst the form shifts across the ep from half-time, polyrhythmic work to more direct 4x4 compositions – everything remains bound by the same exquisite, otherworldly atmosphere that touches on the grandiose whilst maintaining a gloriously introspective bent.

dylan cameron made his debut release in 2016 on the austin-based holodeck, which has made a lot of noise the last couple of years with releases by marie davison and s u r v i v e. the inifinte floor album set the stage for things to come and tru welcomes dylan to the stable with the dark and minimal purgatory ep. . purgatory features 3 dark and heavy techno cuts starting with dark sorcerer and leads into lost souls on the a-side and continues into the b-side with trojan horse, all weaving in sharp synths and shuffling rhythms not unlike some of dj rush’s or even jeff mills’ best productions. chicago meets detroit meets germany. all tracks meant for the floor and none that disappoint. celsius rounds out the ep with it’s minimal tech-house leanings with oscillating tones, making it a great beat track for layers or to be played in a minimal techno set.

am elften september 2015 erlebte das publikum der konzertserie die erste live show des duos john gürtler und phillip sollmann unter einer autobahnbrücke in offenbach. präsentiert von dem international music institute darmstadt in zusammenarbeit mit dem institut für klangforschung offenbach und der hfmdk frankfurt, wurde man zeuge einer einzigartigen auralen konversation innerhalb dieses überwältigenden settings. ein jahr später fand sich ein fragment der aufnahme des brückenkonzerts auf der sky walking label compilation 41.36 und nun erscheint das erste album der beiden musiker. phillip sollmann und john gürtler treffen sich 2011 im gerade fertiggestellten studio komplex the meadow, in berlin wedding. seitdem herrscht ein reger austausch an ideen und ihre zusammenarbeit beginnt ganz pragmatisch mit einem experimental remix, einer akustischen version von john gürtler für sollmanns techno projekt efdemin, veröffentlicht anlässlich einer reihe von remixen auf dial records.

japan’s hokuto sato is back on his own aura music with three hypnotic techno-house. on the a side, we’ve got 2 tracks composed of rich layers of concrete sounds and strange voice samples over tight drums and percussions. on the flip “awayuki (light snow)” is a good example of how piano house can be twisted and stripped down for modern dance floors.
already big support by oscar mulero, shifted, blawan, jonas kopp, andre kronert and more. in what is already his sixth release on his own angls imprint, dimi angelis unveils his love for loopy, noisey techno. first drop vector shift skips the pleasantries and gets right down to it, fusing gritty saws and a rumbling bassline with ominous industrial stabs. on the flipside dislocated stays with the program, but opts for a slightly deeper approach, riding on an unrelenting hihat. follow-up and final track triplicity closes it down in style, sounding almost like some of the machines hardwired themselves. straight-up bangers, all three of them.

thomas brinkmann is one of the great producers of techno music and modern dance music. he initially gained notoriety in the experimental electronic music and techno community for his full-length variations of material by wolfgang voigt under his mike ink moniker, and richie hawtin. the variations were made by playback of the original artist records on a turntable of brinkmann s design, which has two tone arms with separate outputs for left and right channels. the turntables were then pitched down from 33rpm to 27rpm and the results recorded and mixed. both voigt and hawtin were sufficiently impressed they released the results on their own labels. since then thomas brinkmann has produced some all-time classic dance tracks, many of which are collected here in what is a personal selection by thomas brinkmann himself. there are unreleased tracks, different versions, and tracks that have never been released on vinyl. a full colour 20-page book with track notes by thomas brinkmann and photos from his personal collection is included. limited edition box. highly recommended! ean4050486123461
